July

The Tony Awards were awarded on June 13 with few surprises, and the Broadway season is over for the summer. Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Scarlett Johansson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Douglas Hodge and Katie Finneran were honored, and "Memphis" and "Red" won also.  All well deserved.

Off Broadway continues, and rush to Central Park for a brilliant Al Pacino in "A Merchant of Venice", and a splendid production of "A Winter's Tale". "The Grand Manner" starring Kate Burton, a revival of "Nunsense", a revival of "The Irish...and How They Got That Way", "Bachelorette", "Falling for Eve", "See Rock City & Other Destinations", "We the People: America Rocks", and "Abraham Lincoln's Big, Gay Dance Party" will all open this month, and seem interesting. But the major focus will be the Lincoln Center Festival, which includes a 12 hour performance of "The Demons", and other international performances, beginning July 7.

The New York City Ballet season ended June 27, but it was fascinating, with seven world premieres, four of which I saw in June. I enjoyed "Estancia" by Christopher Wheeldon the most, but the other three had something experimental to see, and were worth a visit, and the dancing was first rate. The scenic designs of Santiago Calatrava were occasionally impressive. Old favorites like "Who Cares?", "La Source" and a magnificently danced "Western Symphony", with Rebecca Krohn, Megan Fairchild and Teresa Reichlen excelling, brought the season to a rousing conclusion. There are two weeks left to see American Ballet Theatre with their "ABT Premieres", their glorious program "All-Ashton" (which I saw in June), and "American Program", culminating in a final week of "Romeo & Juliet". Michele Wiles and Corey Stearns were outstanding in "Swan Lake", Veronika Part and Marcelo Gomes were delightful in "The Sleeping Beauty", and Diana Vishneva is incomparable in "Thais Pas de Deux", and she is the reason to see "Lady of the Camellias".

I attended some films from June 5-12 at the Cine Fest Petrobras Brasil-NY, and was very impressed. Documentaries like "Rita Cadillac:The Lady of the People", comedies like "Elvis & Madona", and "So Normal 2", with the ravishing Daniel Suzuki, were very enjoyable, and both Rita and Daniele attended the festival. The Film Society of Lincoln Center has already opened its New York Asian Film Festival, which continues until July 8. I saw the Korean "Castaway on the Moon", and it is highly recommended. "The Complete Clint Eastwood" July9-27 will satisfy every fan, and I saw a screening of the superb "Escape from Alcatraz", and Eastwood has never been better. On July 30-August 5, "Russellmania" begins, and I am looking forward to seeing press screenings of "The Boy Friend" and "Savage Messiah".

I received the new cast recording of "Promise, Promises". It is a delight. Sean Hayes is wonderful, as well as the rest of the cast, which includes Kristin Chenoweth, Tony winner Katie Finneran, and Dick Latessa.  You will enjoy listening to the most melodious score of the Broadway season, with songs like "I Say a Little Prayer" and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again".  You will fall in love with this album.
